Two big-P Purposes

You have a Soul Purpose and a Human Purpose; with luck they’re aligned

I remember how annoyed I was the first time I heard the suggestion that I had chosen my earthly family and the circumstances of my birth before I was even born. “Them? No expletive way!”

But there’s nothing like personal experience to create a change of perspective. You see, I’ve visited there many times now — the Other Side, that is — and I understand that I chose my body (I had two other possibilities, very different from this one) and along with that choice, most of my current-life circumstances. Not the details, just general features, big events, and important relationships. And in particular the lessons I would be offered.

As a human being, you have at least two purposes. With a capital P. That first one, the one you decided on before you came into this life, is your Soul Purpose. It was determined not just by your individual soul, though the final choice was yours, but through discussion with your soul guides and elders. Context, family and important relationships, and the general course of your life all support the opportunities for growth you choose between incarnations.

The Soul Purpose is about learning. Much of the time the lessons you chose to face as a soul are offered as challenges in your human lifetime. Consider for a moment how many different kinds of trials you have experienced: emotional, financial, work related, physical, philosophical… Can you see a theme there?

The nature and intensity of the learning opportunities for any soul are unique for every person, even within the same family or social group, and you may not know what they are until you go back home to the realm of souls and review your life.

The other purpose is one that you develop during your lifetime. It’s a very human one, responding to the question “How can I make this amazing place we call the Earth better for all who are here?” For many people it is about providing service to others in some way, whether it be as a construction worker, a store cashier, a mother, father or sibling, an entrepreneur, a volunteer, or a supportive friend. These roles are your way of contributing to the human world, and they too look different in every person.

Some people find a way to bring their two purposes into harmony. Have you ever met someone whose work looks mundane, even menial, and who is utterly happy in it? That may be one of the fortunate ones whose Soul Purpose and Human Purpose are aligned.

(It’s also useful to know that every now and then, you can choose a life which is easy and pleasant simply to provide you with an opportunity to fully appreciate all of the beauty, wonder, and adventure that this planet offers. Those ones are known as “reward lives,” and you probably know someone who fits this description.)

I’m not afraid of death because I know that the essential “I” is immortal. I know from numerous experiences what will happen as this body dies and afterward. When I go Home again I know who will meet me and what that meeting will be like because I’ve visited that realm from this life, and have come back here wiser, more accepting, and with a clearer sense of my Purposes.

I also know that I’m likely to come back again to this juicy, loud, dense, sensual world, having agreed once again to take on new lessons that will help my soul to develop and finding new ways to be of service to my peeps.

Eventually, like many souls I have met in that realm, I will have grown to the point where I can move on to higher lessons, in places that I can only guess at from here.

I hope that this article might help you see your life here in a new way, and perhaps choose a new path for yourself and your soul with greater awareness.
